Jacques Steinberg is the author of “The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College,” a New York Times-best seller and Times Notable Book that was first published by Viking-Penguin in September 2002. The book was reissued by Penguin, with a new Afterword written in conjunction with its 10th anniversary, in September 2012.
He was a journalist at The New York Times for more than two decades, most recently as its senior editor for education initiatives. At The Times, Mr. Steinberg edited The Choice, the Times’ college admissions and financial aid blog, which he created for the paper in spring 2009, as well as The New York Times Learning Network. He also conceived and led the programming for the first-ever New York Times College Life Fair, staged in Chicago in May 2012, which attracted more than 6,000 students from the Chicago public schools and featured 200 colleges and universities
While much of his career has been spent as an education reporter, he took a break from writing about classrooms and teachers from 2003 to 2008 to write about television and other media for The Times.
His most recent book is “You are an Ironman: How Six Weekend Warriors Chased Their Dream of Finishing the World’s Toughest Triathlon,” was published in hardcover by Viking in September, 2011, and paperback in June 2012.
He graduated in 1984 from Dartmouth College, where he majored in history and edited the student daily, The Dartmouth. He is a graduate of Somerset High School in southeastern Massachusetts.
